How to spot real silk and what is momme?

The ultimate guide to natural mulberry silk. Benefits, quality and why it matters.

In a world of synthetic "silk-like" fabrics, understanding the power of 100% natural mulberry silk is the key to elevating your beauty routine. At Katrina Silks, we believe luxury should be functional. Here is everything you need to know about the "queen of fabrics."

The science-backed benefits of natural silk

Natural silk is a powerhouse of amino acids and proteins that actively care for your hair and skin.
* Anti-frizz and anti-tangle. The ultra-smooth texture allows hair to glide without friction, preventing split ends and morning tangles.
* Skin hydration. Unlike cotton, silk is non-absorbent. It keeps your skin’s natural moisture and expensive serums where they belong - on your face.
* Temperature regulation. Silk is a natural thermal regulator. Its breathable fibers keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
* Surprising strength. Don't let the softness fool you. Long-fiber silk is one of the strongest natural textiles, offering incredible durability and a fast drying speed.

Understanding quality: why 25 momme mulberry silk?

When shopping for silk, the two most important factors are source and weight.
What is mulberry silk?
Mulberry silk is the highest quality silk in the world. Produced by silkworms fed exclusively on mulberry leaves, it results in longer, more refined threads that are softer and more durable than any other variety.

The importance of momme (mm)

Think of momme as the weight and density of the silk. It measures how many strands of silk are packed into the fabric:
* 19mm: Lightweight and often less durable for daily use.
* 22–25mm: The good zone for beauty products - luxurious, thick, and long-lasting.

The Katrina Silks standard: We use 25 momme mulberry silk sourced from the historic Como region of Italy. This ensures a thicker, more resilient fabric colored with non-toxic, EU-standard dyes.

Silk versus satin: don't be fooled by "silk-like" fabrics
Many brands use the term "silk-satin" to mask the use of synthetic materials like polyester or nylon.

Feature 100% Natural mulberry silk Synthetic satin (Polyester)
Breathability High (Natural fiber) Low (Traps heat and sweat)
Skin benefits Hypoallergenic and hydrating Can irritate sensitive skin
Luster Soft, muted, multidimensional High, "plastic-like" shine
Sustainability Biodegradable Plastic-based (Non-biodegradable)

If you are serious about investing in your self-care, always look for labels stating 100% pure mulberry silk.
